A Glimpse Into Mirror Magic History

Mirror Magic Through History

Ancient Egypt and Greece
Polished Metal for Scrying and Spirit Communication
Mirror magic dates back to ancient Egypt and Greece, where polished bronze and other metals, predating glass mirrors entirely, were used for scrying and spirit communication, treating the reflective surface as a genuine threshold between the visible and unseen.

The Middle Ages
Black Mirrors and Moonlit Visions
In the Middle Ages, witches were said to use black mirrors, surfaces darkened with paint or smoke rather than reflective glass, for moonlit visions, since a darkened surface reduces literal reflection and is held to encourage the eye, and the mind, to soften into a more receptive, intuitive state.

Folk Tradition
The Covered Mirror in Mourning
In folklore, a covered mirror could stop spirits from entering a home during mourning, a custom documented across multiple cultures and a clear reminder of the mirror's perceived spiritual potency as a genuine doorway, not simply a household object.

If you're not using mirror magic yet, now's the time to look deeper. The same threshold quality that made a covered mirror meaningful during mourning is precisely what makes an uncovered, intentionally used mirror so effective in contemporary ritual work.

What Is Mirror Magic?

What does mirror magic actually mean in practice?

Mirror magic is the practice of using reflective surfaces for ritual, divination, or energy work, and it can be protective, revealing, or empowering depending entirely on your intent, making the same physical object capable of serving very different purposes depending on what you bring to the working.

A Beginner Beauty and Truth Ritual

Beginner Ritual

Mirror Affirmation Ritual

A simple beginner ritual for beauty and truth, suited to any night you need a genuine reconnection with your own worth.

You Will Need Any mirror · A white or pink candle · One rose quartz · Optional: smoke or moon water for cleansing
  1. Cleanse your mirror with smoke or moon water, clearing whatever it has reflected before tonight.

  2. Light a white or pink candle beside it, letting the flame's glow soften the reflection.

  3. Look into the mirror and repeat an affirmation such as: "I see the magic in me. I am light. I am worthy."

  4. Place the rose quartz next to the frame to seal the energy, leaving it there as an ongoing reminder.

Repeat weekly, or whenever you need to genuinely reconnect with your own reflection rather than simply glance past it.

Three Mirror Spells

These three spells extend the beginner ritual above into more specific applications.

Mirror Spell One

Beauty and Confidence Spell

For mornings you need a genuine reminder of your own worth before facing the day.

You Will Need A small handheld or compact mirror · A drop of rose or citrus oil
  1. Hold the mirror and look directly at your reflection, taking three slow breaths before speaking.

  2. Speak aloud: "I carry my own light with me today. I am seen. I am enough."

  3. Touch a drop of oil to your pulse points, carrying the working with you through the day.

Mirror Spell Two

Banishing Reflection Spell

For releasing a draining presence or pattern, using the mirror's reflective nature directly.

You Will Need A mirror, ideally one not used for everyday grooming · A black candle
  1. Light the candle and position the mirror facing away from you, toward a door or window.

  2. Name what you are releasing aloud, plainly and specifically.

  3. Speak: "This mirror reflects what no longer belongs near me. It is sent back, and I am clear."

  4. Snuff the candle and turn the mirror to face the wall for the rest of the night.

Mirror Spell Three

Simple Scrying Practice

A genuine introduction to scrying using a black mirror or a darkened surface.

You Will Need A black mirror or any dark, low-reflective surface · A single candle, positioned to one side rather than directly in front
  1. Sit in low, dim light with the mirror in front of you and the candle off to one side.

  2. Soften your gaze rather than staring directly, letting your focus rest just past the surface.

  3. Hold a single question in mind and simply notice whatever arises, an image, a feeling, a word, without forcing interpretation.

  4. Write down what you noticed immediately afterward, before the impression fades.

Scrying is a skill that develops with repetition. The first several attempts may produce very little; that is normal, not a sign you are doing it wrong.
