I'm Aisling. Sorceress Sanctuary began long before it was a website, and this is the true story behind the witchcraft supplies you'll find here: market stalls, mountain air, a pandemic that nearly ended it, and a community that grew up slowly instead of overnight.
Sorceress Sanctuary is a practitioner-owned witchcraft supplies store founded in 1998 in the Blue Mountains, Australia, now based in Brisbane. It moved online in 2023 after COVID-19 closed its market stalls, ships globally, and offers free Australian shipping on orders over $45 AUD.

I grew up in the Blue Mountains, learning which leaves eased a fever and which flowers went under a pillow from my grandmother. She was my first teacher, though she'd never have called herself that. Two of her oldest friends, women the community quietly called wise long before anyone said "witch" out loud, taught me alongside her, patient with a kid who asked too many questions.
I opened my first stall in Leura in 1998. I was sixteen, terrified, and already years into an apprenticeship most people never saw: herbs from my grandmother, ritual from her friends, and a stubbornness that was entirely my own.
Not long after, I went overseas to study, a double major in botany and classical music, of all combinations. I told people they were two separate passions. It took years abroad, missing the mountains and the smell of eucalyptus after rain, before I realised they'd never actually been separate. Plant science gave language to what my grandmother taught by instinct. Music gave rhythm to ritual I'd been performing without ever naming it. That's when the pieces genuinely came together, not as a business plan, just as a fuller version of the same path I'd always been on.
Somewhere in the middle of all that studying and travelling, I became a mother, first to my son, then three years later to my daughter. Both of them changed how I practice more than any book or teacher ever did. I'd spent years working mostly with Hecate, the old keeper of crossroads and threshold magic, the sort of goddess who suits someone independent and a little restless. Motherhood pulled me somewhere else entirely, toward Gaia, the Mother, and a much quieter, earthier kind of devotion. In the language most of us use for it, I moved from Maiden into Mother, not just in the goddess I honoured, but in myself.
These days I run the Sanctuary from Brisbane. Studying abroad pulled me away from the Mountains for good, or so I thought, and life quietly settled me here instead of back where I started. The Mountains are still where the story began, and where I go back to whenever I can, but Brisbane is home now, and it's where every order on this site actually ships from.
Twenty two years after that first stall, everything nearly stopped. When COVID closed the markets in 2020, I lost the only income the business had ever had, almost overnight. What kept it alive wasn't luck, it was the same people who'd been buying from me for years, messaging to ask where they could still order. That's the honest reason Sorceress Sanctuary is online today, not a growth plan, a community that refused to let it end.
Twenty eight years on, I'm not the same practitioner I was at sixteen, and I hope I never stop changing. If you've walked this path for decades, through your own Wiccan circle, a hedge tradition, or something you've never quite put a name to, I suspect you know exactly what I mean. Nine turns, one long apprenticeship
The dream
Long before there was a name for it, there was my grandmother's kitchen table, drying herbs, and a pull I couldn't explain to anyone at school. I'd spend weekends at other stallholders' tables as a teenager, asking questions, imagining what a stall of my own might look like one day.
The first stall, Leura, aged 16
A card table at the Leura markets in the Blue Mountains, and a handful of crystals wrapped in tea towels. That first stall took a full season just to break even, and I wouldn't change a thing about it.
Learning by doing
Markets teach you fast. I learned which stones people actually wanted, not just what looked good, which tools held up to real use, and which regulars would tell me honestly when something wasn't working. There were entire weekends I sold nothing but incense and had to laugh about it on the drive home.
On the road, across Australia
As the stall grew, so did the search. I drove up to the crystal-rich hinterland behind Byron Bay more times than I can count, and out to the opal country of Lightning Ridge and Coober Pedy, meeting people who mined and cut stone rather than simply buying what a catalogue offered.
Deepening the study
The more the stall grew, the more I wanted to understand the traditions behind what I was selling, not just the stones themselves. I studied Celtic and Gaelic folk magic more seriously, then Norse seidr and rune lore, then Hellenic ritual practice, corresponding with practitioners overseas generous enough to answer a stranger's questions. None of it replaced my own path. It deepened it.
Stepping back
My sister became seriously unwell that year, and I stepped back from the stalls almost entirely to help care for her and her two kids. It taught me that the wheel turns whether you're ready or not, and that stepping back for the people you love isn't a detour from the path, it's part of it.
The markets stopped overnight
COVID lockdowns cancelled every market I traded at, with no notice and no clear end date. There was no online store to fall back on, so income went to almost nothing for months. I sold what stock I had left through Instagram messages, dipped into savings I'd meant never to touch, and seriously considered closing for good more than once.
Carried by the circle
What actually got me through was the same regulars I'd been serving for years. They messaged asking where they could still buy, some paid upfront before I'd even packed the order, and word spread by itself. That support is the entire reason I decided to stop patching things together and build a proper online home, slowly and properly, over the next three years rather than rushing it.
The Sanctuary now
Sorceress Sanctuary launched online in 2023. Twenty eight years, one long and honest apprenticeship, new stock landing every season and new supplier partnerships still forming. The flame's still lit, and the circle keeps it burning. That's the whole story, really.

Why "Sorceress Sanctuary"
People used to say "sorceress" like it was something to be ashamed of, a word for the woman in the village everyone whispered about. I chose it for the sign above my stall on purpose. And "sanctuary" because that's genuinely what I wanted this to be: a safe corner for people practising something the wider world still doesn't always understand.
I remember one woman at an early market asking, half joking, if I was worried the name would scare people off. I told her that was rather the point, gently. The people it scares off were never going to stay long anyway, and the people it doesn't are usually exactly who I built this for.
Sanctuary was the easier word to choose, if I'm honest. Everyone wants to believe their favourite shop is a safe place. Sorceress took longer to sit comfortably. I like it best precisely because it still makes a few people flinch.
It's meant something slightly different at every stage of my life. At sixteen, it was armour, a way of saying I belonged in that world before I entirely believed it myself. After becoming a mother, it became something closer to a promise, that whatever changed in how I practised, this would still be a sanctuary for whichever version of me showed up that day, Maiden, Mother, or somewhere in between. The name has outlasted every phase I've moved through. I suspect that's exactly why I picked words instead of just my own name for the sign.
Put together, it's less a brand name and more a small act of defiance I've never once regretted.

A day at the Sanctuary
Most mornings start before the orders do, these days from Brisbane rather than the Mountains, though the routine hasn't changed much. Kettle on, a walk around the garden to check on the rosemary and lavender, sometimes ten minutes just listening to the currawongs before the laptop even opens.
I still light a candle before I start packing, the same small habit from that very first market stall. It's less superstition now and more a way of drawing a line between the rest of life and the hour that belongs to the Sanctuary.

Afternoons are usually herbs, research, or answering messages from people deciding on their first tarot deck.
Evenings, when there's time, are for checking the moon phase and jotting down whatever that day's messages taught me, because they usually teach me something. It's a quiet life, most days. I like it that way.

Recycled and recyclable materials wherever we can source them, minimal plastic, and we're actively moving more lines over to compostable mailers.
Sourcing
We choose suppliers who favour small-scale and family-run operations over mass industrial mining where we can verify it, and reclaimed or vintage pieces over newly mined stone where possible.
Shipping
We consolidate orders where possible to cut unnecessary freight, rather than sending multiple part-shipments for the sake of speed.
Ongoing, not finished
We're a small operation still working this out, not a business claiming to have solved it. We'd rather tell you honestly what we're doing than promise something we can't back up.
Vegan & cruelty-free
Yes. Our candles, incense, and ritual blends are formulated without animal-derived ingredients or animal testing, and any exception is clearly labelled on the product page.
Conflict-free crystals
Yes. Every crystal supplier is checked for fair labour practice before we buy, and we favour small-scale miners we can actually verify over unnamed bulk wholesalers.
A note from Aisling: I don't want any part of this business connected to communities being exploited by fast, cheap import chains. This section will keep changing as we find better ways to do it.
