What Spiritual Cleansing Is
What is spiritual cleansing?
Spiritual cleansing is the practice of intentionally clearing the personal energy field (aura), a physical space, or an object of accumulated stagnant, heavy, or discordant energy through one of several established methods including smoke cleansing, salt, water, sound, crystal work, and visualisation, restoring the cleared subject to a state of energetic clarity that supports health, magical work, and spiritual clarity.
The concept of an energy body surrounding and interpenetrating the physical body exists across many traditions: the aura in Western esoteric thought, the pranamayakosha in Indian philosophy, the qi field in Chinese medicine, the light body in shamanic traditions. Each tradition has its own understanding of what this field is and how it works, but the consistent cross-cultural observation is that the energy field around a person or place accumulates the residue of experience over time, and that this accumulation affects the quality of physical, mental, and spiritual experience.
Spiritual cleansing is not the same as physical cleaning, though the two are related. A physically clean space with stagnant energy from months of conflict and stress will feel different from a physically clean space that has been regularly energetically maintained. The spiritual cleansing practice addresses the energetic layer that physical cleaning does not reach.
Why Witches Practise Spiritual Cleansing
Spiritual cleansing serves several distinct purposes in pagan witchcraft practice, each important enough to warrant a consistent practice rather than occasional attention.
- Pre-ritual preparation. A cluttered or heavy energy field interferes with the quality of magical work. Cleansing before ritual ensures that the practitioner is working from a clear and receptive state rather than through accumulated energetic noise.
- After difficult interactions. Time spent in conflict, in heavy emotional situations, or with people whose energy is draining leaves a residue in the personal energy field. This is not melodrama: it is the energetic equivalent of coming home covered in dust and needing a shower.
- Clearing spaces of stagnation. Energy stagnates in spaces where it is not regularly moved. Corners of rooms, spaces that are rarely used, and areas associated with repeated conflict or illness accumulate heavy energy that affects the quality of life in the space.
- Maintaining magical tools. Crystals, tarot decks, altar tools, and other magical objects absorb the energies of the workings they participate in. Regular cleansing keeps them functioning at their clearest capacity.
- Psychic hygiene. Practitioners who work in healing, spiritual counselling, or any role that involves absorbing others' emotional or energetic material need regular cleansing as occupational hygiene, not as exceptional care.
Signs Your Energy Needs Cleansing
- A persistent feeling of heaviness, fogginess, or low energy that does not have a clear physical cause
- Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or accessing intuition
- Feeling drained after social interactions more than usual
- A space that feels "off," heavy, or unwelcoming despite being physically tidy
- Magical workings that feel sluggish or unclear
- Dreams that feel heavy or disturbing without clear emotional cause
- After illness, grief, conflict, or any period of sustained stress
- After bringing a new object, furniture, or person into your home
Seven Spiritual Cleansing Methods
How to Cleanse Your Aura
The aura is the energy field that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body. Unlike space cleansing, which addresses the energy of a room or object, aura cleansing is personal: it addresses what you are carrying in your own energy field from the accumulation of daily experience.
- Smoke sweep: Light a cleansing herb bundle and pass the smoke slowly around the outside of your body from head to feet, paying particular attention to the crown, the throat, the heart area, and the palms. State your intention: "I cleanse my energy field of all that is not mine and all that does not serve."
- Salt scrub: In the shower, mix sea salt with a small amount of oil (coconut or olive) and scrub gently over the body before rinsing. The salt draws out energetic impurities while the physical scrubbing activates the intention.
- The waterfall visualisation: Stand or sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Visualise a waterfall of clear violet or white light falling from above your head, flowing over and through your entire body and energy field. See it carrying away all heaviness, all that is not yours, all accumulated residue, flowing harmlessly into the earth below your feet. Spend at least three minutes with this image.
- Sound: Tone a single note (any note that feels comfortable) for as long as a single breath allows, then repeat. The vibration of your own voice moving through your body cleanses the energy field from the inside out.
Cleansing Your Space and Magical Tools
When to Cleanse Your Space
Before any significant ritual or spellwork. After illness or conflict in the home. After guests have visited, particularly if the visit felt energetically heavy. At each new moon as a regular maintenance practice. After moving into a new home. After a period of sustained stress, grief, or difficulty. At Samhain and the spring equinox as seasonal clearings.
For magical tools: Crystals should be cleansed regularly, particularly those used in intensive workings. Tarot and oracle decks benefit from cleansing between significant readings: shuffle the deck while visualising white light moving through it, or leave it in moonlight overnight. Candles can be cleansed by passing them through smoke before use. Athames and wands can be wiped with salt water (check the material first) or passed through smoke.

A complete spiritual cleansing practice that takes three minutes and can be performed without any physical materials. Best done immediately after waking or before beginning the day's work. Consistent daily practice is more effective than occasional intensive cleansing.
-
Stand with feet flat on the floor. Take three slow breaths. Feel your feet on the ground. You are about to clear what accumulated overnight and prepare the energy field for the day ahead.
-
Shake your hands vigorously for ten seconds, as if flicking water from the fingertips. This physically and energetically dislodges accumulated energy from the hands and arms, which are the primary points of energetic exchange with the world.
-
Breathe in slowly and as you exhale, visualise all heavy or stagnant energy in your field moving down through your body, through your feet, and into the earth below you. Repeat three times. The earth can neutralise any energy; you are not burdening it but returning what is not yours to be composted.
-
Draw clean energy in. On your next inhale, visualise bright clear light entering through the crown of your head and filling your entire energy field from head to feet with clarity and vitality. State: "I am clear. I am grounded. What is mine stays. What is not mine has been released."
-
If using water, drink the glass mindfully: it seals the cleansing and grounds it in the physical body. If using tourmaline, hold it for a moment and feel its grounding quality before setting it down.
This practice deepens over time. After thirty days of consistent daily practice, most practitioners report a noticeable difference in their overall energetic clarity and their ability to maintain energetic boundaries throughout the day.
