Sea Witch Deities
- Rán (Norse): Goddess of the sea who collects the drowned dead in her net. She is not a gentle sea goddess but a sovereign power of the depths, who receives what the ocean takes. Work with her for deep sea magic, the honouring of those lost to the ocean, and understanding the sea's indifference.
- Njorðr (Norse): God of the sea, wind, fishing, and coastal settlements. Father of Freya and Freyr. Benevolent where Rán is demanding. Good for abundance from the sea, safe travel on water, fishing and coastal blessing.
- Poseidon/Neptune (Greek/Roman): God of the ocean, earthquakes, and horses. A complex deity of enormous power: capricious, easily offended, generous when appeased. Work with him for major ocean workings and for petitions requiring a large force.
- Yemoja (Yoruba/African Diaspora): Mother of waters, goddess of rivers and oceans, protector of women and children, associated with fertility and the moon. One of the most widely worked-with water deities across the African diaspora traditions.
- Selene (Greek): Not a sea deity per se, but the moon goddess whose gravitational pull governs the tides. Sea witch practice is inseparable from lunar practice: Selene belongs on any sea witch altar.
Practising Sea Witchcraft Without Coastal Access
One of the most common questions sea witches ask is how to maintain a practice when they live far from the coast. The answer is that sea witchcraft is rooted in the energy of water and the moon, neither of which requires physical coastal access.
- Ocean water by post or from visits: A small bottle of ocean water collected during a coast visit or ordered from a specialist supplier maintains its energetic properties and can be used in ritual, sprays, and workings throughout the year.
- Salt and water combinations: Sea salt dissolved in water approximates the ocean's material composition and its energetic quality. Use this for cleansing, circle casting, and protective sprays.
- Tidal timing without the ocean: The tides happen whether or not you are standing at the shore. Tide tables are freely available online. Use incoming and outgoing tidal timing for all workings as a sea witch would at the coast.
- Any natural body of water: Rivers, lakes, and streams all carry water element energy and connect energetically to the ocean through the water cycle. A river in landlocked Australia is connected to the ocean. Working at or with local water bodies is sea witch practice.

Two Complete Sea Witch Spells
The Outgoing Tide Release: A Sea Witch Letting Go Spell
This spell uses the energy of the outgoing tide to release what is ready to go. Best performed at an actual coastline at low tide or ebbing tide, but can be performed anywhere using a bowl of salt water and tidal timing checked online.

Check the tide timing. Work during an outgoing (ebbing) tide for maximum alignment with the releasing energy. If at the coast, position yourself safely at the water's edge. If inland, time your working to an outgoing tide and work beside your bowl of salt water.

Write on the paper one thing you are releasing. One thing only, specific. Not "all my problems" but the name of the specific pattern, situation, or attachment that is ready to go.

Hold the sea glass or stone in your non-dominant hand and the paper in your dominant hand. Speak to the ocean or the water before you: "Water that has moved since before memory, I ask you to carry this out with the tide. This is ready to leave me. I am not holding it back. Take it."

Place the paper in the water. At the coast, let it be taken by the waves. In a bowl, submerge it and watch it dissolve. Watch until it is gone.

Speak the release: "It is gone. The tide has it. I do not call it back." Wash your hands in the water to seal the release.
If using a bowl, dispose of the water outside, poured into the earth or into a drain that leads to the ocean, not kept in the home.
The Salt Barrier: A Sea Witch Home Protection Spell
A protection working using the ocean's primary cleansing and protective material: salt. Creates an energetic boundary around the home equivalent to the ocean's natural barrier function. Best performed at the new moon or the incoming tide.

Light the candle and dissolve a tablespoon of sea salt in the bowl of water. Speak over it: "Salt of the ocean, water of the earth, I combine you for protection. You are the barrier at the edge of the sea. You are what protects what lives within your reach."

Carry the bowl through your home starting at the front door and moving clockwise. At each doorway, window, and threshold, dip your fingers in the salt water and trace a line across the threshold: the frame of the door, the windowsill. Speak at each one: "Nothing harmful crosses here. This home is protected by the power of the deep water."

When you have circled the entire home, return to the front door and pour a thin line of dry salt across the threshold from inside. This is the final seal.

Return to the candle and speak: "The barrier is set. This home stands at the edge of the deep water. What the ocean bars, this home bars. The protection holds." Allow the candle to burn for at least an hour before snuffing.
Repeat at each new moon for ongoing protection maintenance. Sweep and replace the salt threshold line monthly.
