Why Use a Spell Template?
What is a spell template?
A spell template is a structured outline with prompts for your intention, timing, tools, incantation, steps and reflection. Filling it in before a spell keeps you focused, and keeping it afterwards turns each spell into a record you can learn from.
- Focus: prompts for intention, timing and materials.
- Consistency: a repeatable structure for future rituals.
- Confidence: no worrying about missing a step.
- Creativity: space to personalise every working.
A Long Tradition of Written Spells
Writing spells down is as old as magic itself. Medieval and Renaissance grimoires such as the Key of Solomon set out rituals in fixed formats. Cunning folk across Britain and Europe kept charm books with remedies written in a consistent order. In 1899 Charles Godfrey Leland published Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches, presenting incantations he said came from Italian witchcraft tradition. A spell template carries that practice forward. The Spell Template
Copy this into your grimoire or journal and fill in each line before you begin.

|---|---|
| Spell name and intention | One clear sentence in the present tense |

| Day and season | The planetary day or sabbat, if you use them |
| Tools and ingredients | Candle colour, herbs, crystals, symbols |
| Incantation | Your words of power, short and rhythmic |
| Ritual steps | Numbered actions from opening to closing |
| Reflection | How you felt, signs you noticed and results over time |
How to Use a Spell Template
Five steps from blank page to finished spell
Set your intention. Write exactly what the spell is for.
Choose your timing. Note the moon phase, day and any seasonal alignment.
Gather your tools. List the candle, herbs, crystals and symbols you will use.
Write your incantation. Compose or adapt words you will speak aloud.
Perform and reflect. Cast the spell, then return days and weeks later to record what happened.

Personalise every template
Templates are guides, not rules. Swap herbs or crystals for what you have, write your own words even if they are simple, add drawings or sigils, and note how you feel at each step. A spell's power comes from intention, not perfection.
Spell Template Questions Answered
Do I need specific crystals or candles?
No. Substitutions are always possible. A white candle and clear quartz can stand in for almost anything, and intention is the most important ingredient.
Can I reuse the same template?
Yes. That is the point of a template. Use a fresh copy for each spell so you build a record over time.
What if my spell does not seem to work?
Results can take time. Review your reflection notes for patterns in timing, ingredients or mindset, then refine and try again.
