Samhain Crystals: The Stones That Actually Work for Ancestor Contact, Divination and Protection

Not all crystals serve Samhain work. These are the ones that do, what each one is actually for, and how to use them in ritual, on your altar, and in contact with the dead.

 ·  Sorceress Sanctuary

There is a version of crystal advice that tells you obsidian is good for Samhain because it is black, and black corresponds to death, and Samhain is about death. That is not wrong, exactly, but it is shallow. The reason obsidian works at Samhain is not its colour; it is its volcanic origin, its use as a scrying mirror across multiple traditions, and its specific quality of reflection, turning a practitioner's attention inward and toward what is hidden. Knowing the why changes how you use a stone.

This guide covers the eight most useful crystals for Samhain work, what each one actually does and why, how to place them on a Samhain altar, two specific rituals, how to pair stones, and how to cleanse them after working with the dead.

The Eight Best Crystals for Samhain

Scrying / Ancestor Contact
Black Obsidian

Volcanic glass formed at the boundary between molten earth and air. That liminal origin gives obsidian a specific affinity for thresholds and transitions, including the threshold between the living and the dead. Its polished surface is a scrying mirror, one of the oldest forms of spirit communication. At Samhain, when the veil is thinnest, obsidian becomes more responsive as a contact stone than at any other time of year.

  • Scrying for ancestor contact
  • Placing at the centre of the altar
  • Holding during meditation with the dead
  • Grief processing and inner reflection
Protection
Black Tourmaline

Where obsidian opens a threshold, black tourmaline holds one closed against what you did not invite. When working with the dead, you are opening a channel; not everything that comes through that channel is an ancestor or a welcomed spirit. Black tourmaline creates a specific energetic boundary without blocking the contact you are seeking. Place it at the perimeter of your ritual space, not on the altar itself.

  • Ritual space boundary-setting
  • Protection during spirit contact
  • Carried in the pocket at crossroads offerings
  • Grounding after intense contact work
Veil-Thinning / Divination
Labradorite

Labradorite's labradorescence (the internal flash of blue, gold and green) is not purely aesthetic; it reflects the stone's nature as a stone of hidden things made visible. It amplifies intuitive perception and psychic receptivity, which is exactly what Samhain divination requires. Tarot, scrying, pendulum work and dream interpretation all run deeper when labradorite is near. It is also specifically connected to the Aurora Borealis in Inuit tradition, making it a stone of otherworldly light in the dark.

  • Placed beside tarot or oracle cards during reading
  • Under the pillow for Samhain prophetic dreams
  • Held during scrying
  • On the altar to amplify psychic openness
Ancestral Blood Work
Garnet

Garnet's deep red connects it to blood, to lineage, and to the life-force that runs through family lines. In ancestor work, garnet specifically calls in blood ancestors (those connected by birth, not just by love or choice), and it anchors the connection in the body rather than in the mind. When you want to feel your ancestors' presence physically, garnet is the stone. It is also protective of the life-force during contact with the dead, preventing the energetic drain that some practitioners experience after deep ancestor work.

  • On the ancestor altar alongside photographs
  • Held during calling in blood lineage ancestors
  • Worn as protection against energy drain
  • Placed on the body during ancestor meditation
Underworld Work / Hecate
Smoky Quartz

Smoky quartz sits at the intersection of light (quartz) and shadow (the irradiation that produces its colour). It is grounding without being heavy, protective without being blocking, and it specifically transmutes negative energy rather than simply absorbing it. For underworld work at Samhain, it holds the practitioner stable while they are in contact with what is heavy or difficult. It also has a specific affinity with Hecate's work at crossroads and liminal spaces.

  • Grounding during and after underworld journeying
  • On the altar during Hecate work
  • Placed at the feet during ritual to keep connection to earth
  • Clearing heavy energy from the space after Samhain
Grief / Spirit Communication
Apache Tears

Apache Tears are a form of obsidian small enough to hold in the palm, and their specific energy is grief. The name comes from an Apache story of mourning, and the stone carries that quality: it absorbs sorrow and processes it, allowing grief to move rather than stay locked. At Samhain, when the dead are present and loss can surface unexpectedly, Apache Tears are the stone for held grief. They are also appropriate as an offering for the recently dead, placed beside their photograph.

  • Held during ancestor grief work
  • Placed beside photographs of the recently dead
  • Given as a gift to someone in mourning at this time of year
  • Carried to Samhain rituals where deep emotion may arise
Dreaming / Prophecy
Moonstone

Moonstone is the dreaming stone across multiple traditions, and Samhain night is the most significant night of the year for prophetic dreams. The veil being thin means that messages from the dead arrive more easily in sleep than at any other time, because the dreaming mind has already lowered its own defences. Moonstone under the pillow on Halloween night amplifies this. It also connects to the Goddess in her crone aspect, the face she wears at Samhain.

  • Under the pillow on Halloween night
  • On the altar to invite the Crone Goddess
  • Worn during lunar-linked Samhain rituals
  • Held during dream journalling in the days after Samhain
Release Work
Jet

Jet is fossilised wood, a material that has undergone the full transformation from living plant to something else entirely. That history makes it the stone of endings and complete transformation, appropriate for Samhain release work (releasing what belongs to the dying year, releasing what you are carrying from the dead). In Victorian mourning tradition, jet was worn in the early period of grief. It is one of the oldest protective stones and has specific use in protection from wandering spirits at threshold times.

  • Release rituals and end-of-year letting go
  • Protection from unwanted spirits at the crossroads
  • On the altar as a representation of completed transformation
  • Held during the burning of what you are releasing

How to Place Crystals on a Samhain Altar

Placement matters. The following arrangement is based on directional and elemental logic rather than aesthetics, and it produces better results for the same reason: it is organised around the actual energy you are working with.

Position Crystal Why
Centre Black obsidian The focal point of contact with the dead. The scrying surface faces up or faces the practitioner.
North (earth) Smoky quartz or garnet The earth direction grounds the ritual and holds the practitioner stable. Garnet for blood lineage work; smoky quartz for general grounding.
East (air / divination) Labradorite The east is the direction of mind, perception and psychic opening. Labradorite amplifies both.
West (water / ancestors) Apache Tears or moonstone The west is the direction of the dead, the setting sun, the place the ancestors come from. These stones deepen that connection.
Before photographs Garnet One piece per ancestor whose photograph is on the altar. The garnet anchors the connection to that specific person.
Perimeter Black tourmaline (four corners) Not on the altar surface but at the ritual space boundary. Creates the container without interfering with the contact work inside it.

Can I use crystals as Samhain offerings?

Yes, with one important distinction: crystals placed on the altar as working pieces are not offerings, they are tools that stay in your possession. A crystal left as a true offering - one you give and do not take back - belongs to whoever it is given to. Small pieces of jet or Apache Tears can be left as offerings beside ancestor photographs or at the crossroads, but these should be stones you are genuinely releasing, not ones from your working collection. An offering is given completely.

Crystal Rituals for Samhain Night

Obsidian Scrying for Ancestor Contact

Requires: black obsidian sphere or mirror, single candle, dim light
  1. Prepare the space. Place black tourmaline at the four corners of your working area. Light one candle, ideally black or white, and position it so it reflects in the obsidian without blinding your view.
  2. Hold the obsidian. Before placing it on the altar, hold it in both hands for several minutes. Notice its temperature, its weight, its surface. This is not decoration; it is contact.
  3. Speak the name of who you are calling. Not a general invitation. A specific person. Say their name aloud three times. If you have a photograph, touch it with one hand while you hold the obsidian with the other.
  4. Soft gaze, not direct gaze. Look into the obsidian the way you look at something in peripheral vision: not at its surface but through it, or beyond it. This is how scrying vision opens.
  5. Wait. Images, feelings, a sense of presence, a smell - all of these are how contact arrives. Do not force or analyse in the moment; stay receptive.
  6. Close the contact consciously. When you feel complete, say aloud: "I release you with love. The veil closes between us now. Go in peace." Turn the obsidian face-down. Blow out the candle.
  7. Cleanse immediately after. Do not leave obsidian used in contact work sitting uncleansed. See the cleansing section below.

The Crystal Divination Spread for Samhain

For use alongside tarot or oracle cards - the crystals amplify specific aspects of the reading
  1. Set labradorite at the top of your reading space. This amplifies the whole reading's receptivity to what is not immediately obvious.
  2. Set moonstone at your left. Moonstone governs the subconscious and the intuitive; on the receptive side of the body it deepens your own perception during the reading.
  3. Set smoky quartz at your right. Grounding on the active side keeps you connected to the practical reality of what the cards are showing you, not only the visionary dimension of it.
  4. Shuffle and draw as usual. The crystals are not a replacement for the cards; they are a field in which the reading takes place.
  5. For ancestor messages specifically: add a piece of garnet at the centre of the spread. Pull one extra card there with the question: "What does my bloodline want me to know at this time?"

Crystals to Avoid at Samhain

Use with care or avoid entirely

  • Rose quartz opens the heart without protection and can leave practitioners vulnerable to the emotional weight of contact with the dead. It has no protective quality. If you are doing grief work, labradorite with smoky quartz is a better combination for this context.
  • Clear quartz amplifies everything, including things you do not want amplified. Without other grounding stones paired with it, clear quartz used in spirit contact work on Samhain night can make sessions harder to close and harder to ground after. Use it only if you know what you are doing with amplification work.
  • Selenite is beautiful and has real uses, but it dissolves energetic boundaries rather than creating them, and boundary integrity matters when you are in contact with the dead. Keep it away from contact rituals specifically. It is fine for cleansing the space before and after.
  • Citrine is a stone of the living, solar energy, and active creation. It has no affinity with the dead, the underworld or the ancestral. It is not harmful at Samhain but it adds nothing and its energy is contradictory to the seasonal work.

How to Cleanse Crystals After Samhain Ritual

Crystals used in contact work with the dead require cleansing before they are used in other practices. This is not superstition; it is energetic hygiene. The contact quality that makes obsidian useful on Samhain is also what makes it hold residue if you do not clear it.

Cleansing Methods by Stone

  • 🌙
    Moonlight (all stones)
Leave outside or on a windowsill on the night following Samhain. The waning moon after Samhain is specifically good for clearing what has been heavy. Safe for all crystals including soft or water-sensitive ones.
  • 🌿
    Smoke cleansing (all stones)
Pass each stone through smoke from rosemary, mugwort, or cedar. Mugwort is particularly appropriate for Samhain work as it is one of the traditional crossroads herbs. Hold the stone in the smoke for a full breath. Works immediately.
  • 🍁
    Earth burial (robust stones only)
Bury in the garden for 24 hours. Not for soft stones (selenite, lepidolite), not for water-sensitive stones, and not for faceted pieces where the setting may corrode. Obsidian and tourmaline are safe to bury. Dig them up, brush off soil, leave to dry in the air before using again.
  • 💧
Running water (hard, non-porous stones only)
Rinse under cold running water for one minute. Only for stones rated 6 or above on the Mohs scale and non-porous: obsidian, tourmaline, smoky quartz, labradorite, garnet. NOT for jet (it will absorb water and eventually crack), NOT for moonstone (it can lose its surface polish), NOT for Apache Tears (selenite family).
  • 🔔
    Sound (all stones)
A singing bowl, a bell, or even handclaps work through vibration to clear residue. Ring a bell over each stone three times, or set stones inside a singing bowl and sound it. This is the fastest method and safe for everything including delicate stones.
Note on selenite charging plates: Selenite is often recommended for recharging crystals and is generally reliable for that purpose. After Samhain contact work specifically, cleanse the stones first by one of the methods above before placing them on selenite. A charging plate will amplify whatever energy is already there; cleanse first, then charge.
