Lunar Eclipse August 2026

A Witch’s Complete Ritual Guide

On 28 August 2026, the Sturgeon Full Moon in Pisces becomes a near-total lunar eclipse: the most significant lunar event of the second half of the year and one of the most powerful magical windows in 2026. An eclipse is not just a full moon. It is a full moon with a wildcard, a point of accelerated change where the energies of release, transformation, and shadow integration are amplified far beyond a standard lunar working. This guide gives you everything: what this eclipse means, the practitioner debate about casting during eclipses, and two complete rituals designed specifically for this eclipse’s Pisces energy.

What Is a Lunar Eclipse and Why Does It Matter Magically?

What is a lunar eclipse in witchcraft?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to fall across the lunar surface. In witchcraft, a lunar eclipse is understood as a full moon with radically amplified and destabilised energy: the moon’s light is interrupted, her power concentrated and redirected, and the energetic current of the cycle is accelerated in ways that can produce both significant breakthrough and significant disruption in magical workings.

During a total or near-total lunar eclipse, the moon takes on a reddish or coppery hue as Earth’s atmosphere refracts sunlight around the planet and onto the lunar surface. This is what produces the phenomenon commonly called a blood moon, though the term applies specifically to total lunar eclipses where the reddening is complete. The August 2026 eclipse is near-total, meaning the reddening will be partial and visible from Australia.

The magical significance lies in the interruption of the lunar current. In regular full moon work, the moon is at peak illumination and her drawing and releasing energy is at its height. During an eclipse, that current is disrupted and then returns, creating a surge that many practitioners describe as comparable to a psychic and energetic power surge: more intense than a standard full moon but less predictable and harder to direct.

Should you cast spells during a lunar eclipse?

Practitioners are genuinely divided on this, and both positions have merit. Many experienced witches deliberately avoid active spellcasting during the eclipse window itself, treating the time as one for observation, meditation, and shadow work rather than directed manifestation, because the unpredictable surge of eclipse energy can amplify unintended elements of a working alongside the intended ones. Others cast intentionally during eclipses specifically because of this amplification, accepting the wildcard quality as part of the working’s power.

The distinction most practitioners make is between passive and active work. Passive eclipse magic, observation, meditation, journalling, shadow integration, and receiving rather than directing energy, is broadly considered safe and powerful at any eclipse. Active directed spellwork, particularly manifestation or binding, is where the division lies. The recommendation in this guide: perform the protection ritual in the three days before the eclipse, and the release ritual on the night itself, both of which are designed to work with the eclipse’s releasing energy rather than attempt to override its wildcard quality with a directed manifestation.

The Pisces Eclipse: What This Specific Energy Means

Every lunar eclipse carries the energy of its zodiac sign, and the August 2026 eclipse falls in Pisces: the sign of dissolution, spiritual sensitivity, the subconscious, and the dissolution of boundaries between self and other, between the waking world and the dreaming one. Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the planet of illusion, psychic sensitivity, and the deep waters of the unconscious.

A Pisces eclipse specifically amplifies:

  • Psychic and intuitive sensitivity in the days surrounding it. Dreams will be more vivid and more meaningful. Pay attention to them.
  • The dissolution of what is no longer true. Pisces eclipses tend to dissolve illusions: beliefs you have been holding that were never accurate, relationships whose nature has changed without being named, narratives about yourself that have served their purpose and need releasing.
  • The boundary between the conscious and subconscious. Shadow material surfaces more easily. This makes the eclipse a powerful time for shadow work, but it also means that unexamined material may surface without invitation.
  • Spiritual sensitivity and psychic receptivity. The veil between ordinary awareness and deeper perception is thinner. Divination, dream work, and meditation are particularly potent during this window.

Southern Hemisphere Context

In Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, the August full moon falls during late winter moving toward spring. The Snow Moon (the Southern Hemisphere name for the August full moon) carries themes of endurance, inner strength, and the approaching end of the cold season. Combined with the eclipse energy, this makes the August 2026 eclipse a particularly powerful window for releasing what you have been carrying through the winter months and opening toward the spring renewal that Ostara will bring in September. The eclipse and Ostara together create a two-part releasing and renewal sequence unique to the 2026 Southern Hemisphere calendar.

Ritual One: The Pre-Eclipse Protection Working

Perform in the three days before 28 August.

Protection Ritual · Perform Before 28 August

The Shield of Still Water: A Pre-Eclipse Protection Ritual

Eclipse energy amplifies everything: intended and unintended alike. This protection ritual establishes an energetic boundary around you before the eclipse window opens, giving you a stable inner container from which to work the release ritual on the night itself. Think of it as sealing the room before opening the window.

You Will Need A black candle · A bowl of water · A pinch of salt · Labradorite or obsidian · A sprig of rosemary · Optional: a drop of frankincense or protective oil
  1. Dissolve the salt in the bowl of water and place the crystal beside it. Light the black candle. Sit quietly and feel your own energetic boundaries: where you end and the world begins. If they feel unclear or porous, this ritual is especially important.

  2. Hold the rosemary over the candle flame briefly (not enough to catch fire, just to warm it and release its oils) and then run it through the smoke. Speak: "Rosemary for protection. I am clear. I am bounded. What is mine is mine and what is not mine does not enter."

  3. Dip your fingers in the salt water and touch your forehead, throat, heart, and wrists. At each point, speak: "This boundary holds. This boundary holds. The eclipse passes through the sky, not through me."

  4. Place the crystal in the salt water and leave it overnight to charge. Remove it in the morning, dry it, and carry it with you through the eclipse period. The crystal holds the protection you have set.

  5. Pour the salt water outside or down the drain with intention, releasing whatever it has drawn out of your field in the cleansing process.

Repeat the water-touching step each morning in the three days before the eclipse. The protection deepens with each repetition.

Ritual Two: The Eclipse Release Working

Perform on the night of 28 August during or shortly after the eclipse.

Release Ritual · Perform on 28 August

The Dissolution: A Pisces Eclipse Release Ritual

The full moon in Pisces, amplified by eclipse energy, is the most powerful release working of the year for anything that has been held through the winter: illusions, emotional weight, outdated narratives, and relationships or circumstances that have dissolved in practice but not yet in your energetic field. This ritual names what is released and surrenders it to the eclipse current to carry away.

You Will Need A white or silver candle · A bowl of water · A piece of paper · A pen · Moonstone and aquamarine · A fireproof dish · Mugwort (burned safely or placed on the altar)
  1. Set up in view of the sky if possible, or at a window facing the direction of the moon. Place the bowl of water where it can catch any available moonlight (even indirect light through cloud). Light the candle and mugwort safely.

  2. Write on the paper what you are releasing. This is not a list of grievances. It is an honest account of what has genuinely run its course: one specific thing that you have been carrying that no longer belongs to the person you are becoming. Name it precisely.

  3. Hold the moonstone and aquamarine in your non-dominant hand while you read what you have written aloud. Then speak: "This eclipse carries what the full moon cannot hold alone. The shadow passes across the moon and takes with it what I am releasing. I name this and I let it dissolve. As the light returns to the moon, it returns to me without this weight."

  4. Light the paper in the candle flame and place it in the fireproof dish. Watch it burn completely. As it burns, breathe slowly and feel the space where it was.

  5. Plunge the crystals into the bowl of water to cool and cleanse after the burning, then hold the bowl up toward where the eclipsed moon is in the sky. Speak: "The water holds what remains. The moon charges what continues. I am released and I am open."

  6. Drink a small amount of the moon water or use it to anoint your wrists and forehead in the days that follow. Pour the rest outside or into a natural water source with gratitude.

Date: 28 August 2026 · Moon: Pisces Full Moon Lunar Eclipse

Before the eclipse (complete in the afternoon):
What have I been carrying through this winter that belongs to the season that is ending?
What illusion have I been maintaining that I know is no longer true?
What will I name and release tonight?

During or immediately after (complete on the night):
What I released: [write in full, uncensored]
What arose that I did not expect:
What the eclipse felt like in my body:
What I noticed in the sky, the room, or my own mood as the eclipse progressed:

Three days after (complete by 31 August):
What has shifted since the eclipse?
What dream or intuition arrived in the following nights?
What is moving toward me that the release made room for?
What do I want to plant at Ostara (23 September) now that this is cleared?

My Pisces eclipse word (one word that captures this release):
“An eclipse is not an ordinary full moon. It is the moon moving through shadow and returning changed. The witch who works with it rather than against it moves through shadow and returns changed too.”
“I release it to the eclipse and trust the returning light to find me lighter.”
