Moon Magic Spells

One Complete Working for Every Lunar Phase

The moon does not stay the same. Neither should your magic. Each of the eight lunar phases carries a distinct energy, a different quality of power that amplifies certain kinds of working and makes others more difficult. Working with the moon rather than despite it is one of the most fundamental skills in witchcraft, and the most practical question any witch asks is the simplest one: which moon phase spell do I cast tonight? This guide answers that question with a specific lunar spell for every phase, with a complete lunar spell and moon magic working for each one, plus the distinction between the dark moon and the new moon that most guides get wrong.

TonightEvery phase is an opportunity. The question is knowing which working belongs to which phase.

Why Lunar Timing Makes Magic More Effective

Working with the moon is not superstition dressed as practice. It is the recognition that human energy, like tidal water, responds to the moon's gravitational and energetic influence, and that the quality of magical work changes depending on where the moon sits in its cycle. The ancient world understood this practically: planting, harvesting, fishing, medicine-making, and magical working were all timed to the lunar calendar because the results were observably better when the timing was right.

The principle of moon magic is simple: the waxing moon (growing) amplifies drawing, attraction, and building. The waning moon (diminishing) amplifies releasing, banishing, and letting go. The full moon is the peak of both: the point of greatest power, most useful for culmination, release, and any working that needs maximum amplification. The new and dark moons are the turning points: the dark moon is the ending and the new moon is the beginning.

Working against the lunar current is not impossible but it is like swimming upstream: the working is harder and the results are less consistent. A banishing moon spell cast at the full moon will do something. The same banishing cast at the dark or waning moon will do it better, with less effort, and hold longer.

The Dark Moon vs the New Moon: The Distinction Most Guides Get Wrong

What is the difference between the dark moon and the new moon?

The dark moon is the phase immediately preceding the new moon, typically lasting one to three days, when the moon is not visible in the sky at all because it is positioned between the earth and the sun and its illuminated face is turned entirely away from us: it is the phase of true darkness, endings, deep rest, and the void before beginning. The new moon, by contrast, is the first visible sliver of crescent that appears in the sky after the dark moon, marking the true beginning of the new lunar cycle.

Most moon magic guides, and most phone apps that track the moon, label the dark moon as "new moon" because astronomically the new moon is defined as the moment of the moon's conjunction with the sun, which occurs during the period of invisibility. But magically and experientially, the dark moon and the new moon are distinct phases with opposite energies.

The dark moon is for endings, banishing, shadow work, and deep rest. Its energy is contractive, inward, and final. It is the right time for releasing what is no longer needed, completing cycles, and sitting in the void before the new cycle begins. The new moon is for beginnings, intention-setting, and planting seeds. Its energy is initiatory and expansive, even though the moon appears as only a thin crescent. The first emergence of the crescent is when new-beginning energy is strongest.

In practical terms: if your moon app says "new moon" and the moon is not visible at all in the sky, you are in the dark moon phase. Wait twenty-four to forty-eight hours for the crescent to appear before doing new-beginning workings. The dark moon in that window is excellent for the banishing and releasing workings in this guide.

The Dark Moon Spell: The Void Banishing

Dark Moon · Banishing · Spell One of Eight

The Void Banishing: A Dark Moon Releasing Ritual

Dark Moon Banishing Shadow Work Endings

The dark moon is the void: the three days when the moon is absent from the sky and the energetic current is at its most contractive. This is not a time for new beginnings. It is the most powerful time for banishing, for releasing what is complete, and for sitting honestly in the space before the new cycle begins. This spell uses the dark moon's contractive energy to banish one specific thing that is ready to leave your life.

You Will Need One black candle · A piece of paper · A pen · A fireproof dish · Black tourmaline or obsidian · Optional: a pinch of black salt
  1. Light the black candle in a darkened room. The dark moon works in darkness and stillness. Sit quietly for a few minutes before beginning. Feel the absence of the moon, the genuine quiet of this phase, rather than treating it as an obstacle to work around.

  2. Write on the paper what you are banishing: one thing, named precisely. Not "negativity" but the specific pattern, habit, relationship dynamic, or circumstance that has run its course. Be honest. The dark moon does not respond to vague intentions.

  3. Read it aloud once. Then speak: "This belongs to the cycle that is ending. The dark moon takes what is complete. I release this without drama and without grief. It served what it served. It is done."

  4. Light the paper from the candle flame and place it in the fireproof dish. Hold the black tourmaline or obsidian in your non-dominant hand while it burns. The crystal grounds you while the release moves through.

  5. When the ash is cool, scatter it outside, away from your home. If using black salt, sprinkle it over the ash before scattering. Snuff the candle and sit in the dark for a moment before turning on a light. The void is not a problem to escape from: it is the fertile ground the new moon emerges from.

Do not begin new workings during the dark moon. This is the completion phase. Rest, reflect, and do the releasing work. The new moon is three days away.

The New Moon Spell: The Seed Intention

New Moon · Intention · Spell Two of Eight

The Seed Intention: A New Moon Beginning Ritual

New Moon Intention Setting New Beginnings Manifestation

The new moon crescent is the first breath of the new cycle. The energy is initiatory and expansive: a seed planted now has the full waxing moon to grow. This spell sets one clear, specific intention for the lunar cycle ahead, using the ritual of writing, sealing, and moonlight exposure to begin the working.

You Will Need One white or silver candle · A piece of paper · A pen · Moonstone or clear quartz · Your Book of Shadows
  1. Light the white candle. Sit quietly. Consider what this lunar cycle is for. Not a wishlist: one intention, the most important thing you are calling in or building over the next twenty-nine days.

  2. Write the intention on the paper in present tense, as if already partially true: "I am building [X]" or "[X] is arriving in my life now." One sentence. Specific. Honest. Something you genuinely want rather than something you think you should want.

  3. Read it aloud to the candle and to the new moon if you can see the crescent. Speak: "This is the seed of this cycle. I plant it in the dark of the new moon. I commit to tending it as it grows. By the full moon, I will know how it is taking root."

  4. Place the paper under the moonstone or clear quartz and leave it on your altar or windowsill overnight where any moonlight, even diffuse, can reach it. The new moon's energy charges the intention even when the crescent is barely visible.

  5. Record the intention in your Book of Shadows with tonight's date. Return to the entry at the full moon and again at the following dark moon to note how the working has developed.

"The seed is in the ground. I cannot see it yet. That is not evidence that it is not growing."

The Waxing Crescent Spell: The Draw

Waxing Crescent · Drawing · Spell Three of Eight

The Silver Thread: A Waxing Crescent Attraction Spell

Waxing Crescent Attraction Drawing Momentum

The waxing crescent is the first visible growth of the cycle: the moon is drawing in, expanding, and the current is ideal for drawing things toward you. This spell uses the waxing momentum to pull your new moon intention toward you more actively, visualising the energetic thread between you and what you are drawing in.

You Will Need A light blue or silver candle · A piece of silver thread, ribbon, or any cord · Aquamarine or blue lace agate · The intention paper from your new moon working
  1. Light the candle and hold the crystal in your right hand (or dominant hand), the thread in your left. The thread is the connection between you and what you are drawing in.

  2. Close your eyes and visualise what you set as your new moon intention as clearly and physically as possible: not as an abstract desire but as a lived experience. Feel its texture, hear its sounds, sense its presence.

  3. Wind the thread slowly around the crystal as you visualise, speaking: "As the moon grows, this draws to me. As the light increases, so does the movement toward me. The thread between us shortens every night."

  4. Place the wrapped crystal on top of the new moon intention paper. Leave both on your altar until the full moon. The crystal holds the drawing energy active between your ritual sessions.

The First Quarter Spell: The Commitment

First Quarter · Decision · Spell Four of Eight

The Crossroads Candle: A First Quarter Decision Spell

First Quarter Decision Courage Commitment

The first quarter is the moon at half-light: the point where the cycle reaches its first significant tension. Energy-wise, this phase corresponds to the first real challenge or decision point in any endeavour: the moment of committing despite uncertainty. This spell is for decision-making, courage, and overcoming the first obstacle in the cycle's working.

You Will Need One yellow or orange candle · A pen · Two small pieces of paper · Tiger's eye or carnelian
  1. Write the decision or obstacle on the first piece of paper. What is the first quarter tension: what is the thing that is challenging the momentum of your intention?

  2. Write your commitment on the second piece of paper: not the outcome you want but what you are willing to do and be in pursuit of it. What do you commit to, regardless of whether it is easy?

  3. Light the candle and burn the obstacle paper first in the flame. Then hold the commitment paper and speak: "I commit to this without guarantee of ease. The first quarter is not about certainty. It is about choosing to continue." Keep the commitment paper on your altar under the tiger's eye for the remainder of the cycle.

The Waxing Gibbous Spell: The Refinement

Waxing Gibbous · Refinement · Spell Five of Eight

The Patience Working: A Waxing Gibbous Adjustment Spell

Waxing Gibbous Patience Refinement Building

The waxing gibbous is the phase most practitioners overlook: the moon is almost full, the energy is still growing, but the work now is refinement rather than expansion. This is the moment to adjust your approach, not your intention. If the intention set at the new moon needs to be more specific, more honest, or more aligned with what you actually want, now is when you refine it before the full moon amplifies whatever is present.

You Will Need A green candle · Your Book of Shadows · The intention paper from the new moon · Green aventurine or malachite
  1. Read your new moon intention aloud. Then ask yourself two questions honestly, and answer them in your Book of Shadows before doing anything else: Is this still what I actually want? Is there a more accurate or specific version of this intention that better describes what I am building?

  2. If the intention is right, light the green candle and speak: "The intention holds. The approach refines. I move into the full moon clear and committed." Place the aventurine on the intention paper.

  3. If refinement is needed, write the updated intention on a new paper, light the candle, and speak: "I refine without abandoning. I adjust without retreating. The full moon will amplify what is here. Let what is here be honest."

The Full Moon Spell: The Release and Receive

Full Moon · Culmination · Spell Six of Eight

The Full Moon Release: Peak Power Working

Full Moon Manifestation Release Peak Power

The full moon is the peak of the lunar cycle: the point of greatest light, greatest amplification, and greatest power. Any spell cast at the full moon is cast with the moon's full support. This working combines the two actions that the full moon does best: releasing what is blocking the intention, and receiving what the intention has been building toward.

You Will Need One white candle · Your new moon intention paper · A second piece of paper · A fireproof dish · Moonstone and selenite · A bowl of water (to make full moon water while you work)
  1. Place your crystals, the bowl of water, and any tools you wish to charge in moonlight before you begin, or on a windowsill that receives it. This charges them passively while you work.

  2. Light the white candle. Read your intention paper aloud in full. Acknowledge what has moved toward you in this cycle, even if it is only a beginning. The full moon asks for honest accounting, not performance of gratitude.

  3. On the second paper, write what is blocking the intention from full arrival: what is the resistance, the fear, the pattern, the circumstance? Be specific. This is what you release.

  4. Burn the second paper in the fireproof dish, speaking: "At the peak of the cycle I release the block. The moon is full and what was blocking the light is burned away. What I have been building has room to arrive now."

  5. Hold the intention paper and speak the intention one more time, then place it under the moonstone. Leave it in moonlight overnight. The moon amplifies what is under it at this phase.

  6. In the morning, collect your charged moon water. Use it throughout the waning cycle in whatever workings support the intention.

The full moon is also the best time to charge crystals, make moon water, and cleanse your tools by leaving them in moonlight overnight. The amplification extends to everything in moonlight, not only your active working.

The Waning Gibbous Spell: The Gratitude Offering

Waning Gibbous · Gratitude · Spell Seven of Eight

The Harvest Offering: A Waning Gibbous Gratitude Ritual

Waning Gibbous Gratitude Integration Sharing

The waning gibbous is often called the harvest phase: the work has been done, the peak has passed, and the energy now turns to integration and gratitude. This is the most neglected phase in moon magic and often the most potent for maintaining what has been built, because gratitude is one of the most powerful drawing forces in any magical practice.

You Will Need A purple or deep blue candle · An offering dish · Something to offer (food, drink, herbs, a handwritten note of thanks) · Amethyst or lapis lazuli
  1. Light the candle and sit quietly. The waning gibbous asks you to genuinely name what has moved in this cycle: not what you wanted to happen but what actually did. What arrived, however small? What shifted?

  2. Prepare your offering with attention: arrange it as something given freely and with care rather than something placed hastily. This is the exchange of the working: you gave attention and intention, and whatever moved in the cycle is acknowledged and thanked.

  3. Speak the gratitude aloud with specificity: not "thank you for everything" but thank you for the specific thing that moved, the door that opened slightly, the shift in yourself that became visible. Speak to the moon, to your deities if you work with them, or simply to the working itself.

  4. Dispose of the offering respectfully: food and drink outside in the earth, a written note burned, flowers scattered. The offering is given, not displayed.

The Last Quarter Spell: The Cord Cutting

Last Quarter · Release · Spell Eight of Eight

The Last Quarter Cord Cutting: Clearing for the Dark Moon

Last Quarter Cord Cutting Banishing Clearing

The last quarter is the waning half-moon: the mirror of the first quarter, but on the releasing side of the cycle. This is the premier phase for cord cutting, clearing habits, ending what has run its course, and preparing the energetic space for the dark moon that follows. Whatever you release now will be fully gone by the dark moon three days later.

You Will Need A black or dark red candle · A length of black cord or thread, roughly 30cm · Scissors · A fireproof dish · Smoky quartz or black kyanite
  1. Hold the cord in both hands and name what it represents: the habit, the energetic tie, the pattern, the relationship dynamic, the thought loop. Name it specifically, not abstractly. This cord is the thing.

  2. Light the candle. Speak: "This cord represents [specific thing]. It is real and I have held it long enough. The last quarter moon draws the water out of the land. It draws this out of me too."

  3. Cut the cord cleanly with the scissors, speaking as you cut: "It is cut. It does not reattach. What is severed at the last quarter stays severed."

  4. Burn both pieces of the cord in the fireproof dish. As they burn: "What burns does not return. The space is clear. The dark moon will receive what remains and the new moon will find this space empty and ready."

  5. Place the smoky quartz or black kyanite in the space on your altar where the cord was. It grounds and seals the release, holding the cleared space until the new cycle begins.

Cord cutting at the last quarter is significantly more effective than cord cutting at other phases because the releasing current of the waning moon is at its second peak. The dark moon three days later will receive the final remnants of what you released here.

"The moon does not ask whether you are ready. It moves through its phases regardless. The witch's skill is learning to move with it: to release when the current runs out and draw when it runs in."

Southern Hemisphere Lunar Magic

Australia and the Southern Hemisphere

The lunar phases themselves are the same in the Southern Hemisphere: the timing and the phase sequence are identical globally. What differs is the visual appearance of the crescent. In the Northern Hemisphere, the waxing crescent curves to the right. In the Southern Hemisphere, it curves to the left. Some Southern Hemisphere practitioners also note a reversal of the traditional lunar energy correspondence: where Northern Hemisphere tradition places the full moon's peak drawing energy in the northward arc of the sky, Southern Hemisphere practitioners experience peak lunar energy from the northern sky (where the moon is highest in its path). This does not change the phase-based spell timing in this guide, but it is worth noting that your relationship with the visible moon may look different to Northern Hemisphere diagrams you encounter online.

Additionally, the seasonal associations of the moon differ. The full moon nearest Samhain in Australia falls in late April or early May (the Southern Hemisphere Samhain). The harvest moon associated with the full moon nearest the autumn equinox falls in March in Australia rather than September. Awareness of these distinctions allows for more seasonally grounded practice.
