What is an esbat?
An esbat is a Wiccan or pagan gathering or solitary ritual held at the full moon (and sometimes also the new moon), distinct from the eight sabbats of the solar year. The word esbat comes from the Old French esbattre, meaning to frolic or amuse oneself, and was used to describe the witches’ meetings between the great festivals. In modern practice, esbats are the regular monthly working rhythm of the practitioner: a time to honour the full moon, perform magical workings that need the moon’s full power, commune with deities, and review the month’s intentions.
The distinction between sabbats and esbats is one of purpose and frequency. Sabbats are seasonal festivals: they mark the turning of the solar year and are celebrated for their seasonal significance. Esbats are working sessions: they are the regular monthly ritual practice in which spellwork is performed, magical tools are charged, intentions are reviewed, and the practitioner deepens their relationship with the lunar cycle through consistent, repeated practice.

The traditional full moon names come primarily from Native American, Anglo-Saxon, and Colonial American traditions, later adopted into pagan practice through the almanac tradition. They are descriptive: each name reflects what is happening in the Northern Hemisphere natural world during that month. For Southern Hemisphere practitioners, the names shift six months. The magical themes, however, can be adapted to the actual seasonal reality of wherever you are.

Southern Hemisphere Esbat Names
The traditional full moon names were developed in the Northern Hemisphere and reflect its seasonal calendar. Australian practitioners have two options: use the traditional names on their Northern Hemisphere dates (so the Harvest Moon is still called the Harvest Moon in September in the North, regardless of what your local landscape is doing), or shift the names six months to reflect the actual season. Many Southern Hemisphere witches use both: they know the traditional name and its Northern meaning, and they also ground the working in what their actual environment is doing. The Snow Moon in the Northern Hemisphere August falls in the depth of Southern Hemisphere winter, which is actually a reasonable correspondence: the Snow Moon’s themes of stillness and endurance fit a cold Australian August well.
How to Structure Your Monthly Esbat
An esbat does not need to be elaborate. The most effective esbats are those that happen consistently, even simply, rather than occasionally with great ceremony. A basic monthly esbat structure:
- Set the space: Light a candle in silver or white. Place moonstone or selenite on the altar. If you can, position yourself where the moon is visible.
- Open with acknowledgment: Speak the full moon’s name and the themes of this particular moon. This grounds the working in the specific lunar current rather than treating all full moons as interchangeable.
- Review the month’s intentions: Return to the new moon intention you set two weeks earlier. What has moved? What needs attention?
- Perform the working: Whatever spell or ritual the month calls for. Charge your tools and moon water in the moonlight during the ritual.
- Close with gratitude and recording: Thank the moon, record the esbat in your Book of Shadows, and note what you released and what you are carrying forward.
