The Ancient Art and Modern Magic of Potions

To brew is to transform. Every potion is a story told in herbs and heat, a whispered intention stirred clockwise into a cup. Potions are one of the oldest forms of magic, alive in kitchens, gardens, and sacred spaces around the world. This guide covers what a potion genuinely is in witchcraft, the five formats beyond simply drinking, and the meaning behind the ingredients most witches reach for first.

What is a potion in witchcraft, exactly?

In magical terms, a potion is a liquid spell, created by infusing, steeping, mixing, or charging ingredients with a specific intention, and unlike solid tools such as crystals or spell jars, potions are dynamic and often created for temporary, single-use purposes during ritual, healing, or energy work rather than kept as a permanent fixture.

Potions aren't just from fairytales. They are one of the oldest forms of magic, alive in kitchens, gardens, and sacred spaces around the world, long before any storybook cauldron made them seem fictional. What separates a potion from simply mixing liquids together is the same thing that separates any witchcraft tool from an ordinary object: clear, held intention present at every stage of its making.

Types of Potions and Their Uses

Do all potions need to be consumed?

No. Not all potions are made to drink; some are meant to be worn, sprayed, soaked in, or poured onto an altar, and the format you choose should match both your intention and your comfort with consuming plant material, with external formats offering the same magical weight without any ingestion risk.

Understanding the five common potion formats below gives you a genuine vocabulary for what you are actually making, rather than defaulting to "drink it" as the only option.

Drinkable, Food-Safe Herbs Only

Elixirs

The only format genuinely intended for drinking, used for love, energy, or insight, and only ever made with verified food-safe herbs in safe quantities.

For Candles, Skin, and Tools

Spell Oils

Infused oils used for candle dressing, body anointing, or charging tools, carrying intention through scent and touch rather than ingestion.

For Energy Work

Aura Sprays

Cleansing mists using moon water, florals, or citrus, sprayed around the body or a space to clear and reset personal energy.

Herbal Soaks

Bath Potions

Used for intention-setting, release, and ritual bathing, allowing the whole body to absorb a working rather than a single point of contact.

For the Room, Not the Body

Magical Mists

Used to shift the mood of a room or cleanse a sacred space, the atmospheric cousin of the aura spray, aimed outward rather than at yourself.

Potion Ingredients and Their Meanings

Every ingredient in a potion holds its own magical association, built up through generations of consistent use across herbal and folk traditions. Here are five of the most reached-for.

Rose Love, attraction, heart healing Elixir (food-safe petals only), bath, spray View
Lavender Peace, protection, sleep Bath, spray, mist View
Mugwort Psychic ability, lucid dreaming Spray, mist; external use only, not for ingestion View
Lemon Balm Joy, clarity, emotional lightness Elixir (food-safe), bath, spray View
Bay Leaf Manifestation, wishes, protection Spell oil, mist, altar pouring View

Before You Brew Anything for Drinking

  • Mugwort is not safe to ingest in the quantities typically used for magical work and should be reserved for sprays, mists, or external use only.
  • Only verified food-safe herbs belong in an elixir. If you cannot confirm a plant is genuinely safe to drink in the amount used, choose a spray, bath, or oil instead.
  • External formats carry the same magical weight as drinking. A spray, mist, or bath is never a lesser version of potion craft.

Enhancing Your Brews

What can you add to a potion beyond the core herb ingredients?

Three additions consistently strengthen any brew: moon water for lunar power, crystals placed near rather than always inside the liquid, and candlelight or a drawn sigil used to activate the finished potion before its first use.

Moon water adds the charged quality of lunar timing directly into the liquid itself. Crystals are best kept beside the brewing vessel rather than submerged, both for practical safety with porous or toxic stones and to maintain the crystal's own integrity. A few minutes of candlelight, or a sigil drawn on the label, gives the finished potion a clear point of activation, the moment it shifts from ingredients in a jar to a genuinely charged working.
