Halloween Spell Jar for Protection and Release

A Halloween spell jar is one of the most satisfying workings you can do at Samhain: layer your ingredients, seal it with wax, and it holds the working without any further effort from you. Two jars, two intentions, one ritual. Let's make both.

Spell jars work by layering intention through physical material. Each ingredient holds a specific energetic quality, and when combined with focused intent and sealed, the layers reinforce each other over time. You make them once, place them correctly, and they continue to work without you.

This guide covers two jars: a protection jar to ward and guard, and a release jar to let go of what the year has held. Companion workings: one closes the door on what no longer belongs, the other reinforces the threshold. You can make one or both.

Why is Samhain the right time to make these?

Samhain sits at the end of the Celtic year and marks the beginning of the dark season, when the boundary between the living world and the spirit world is most permeable. This thinning of the veil means that intention set at Samhain carries unusual weight, that what you release at this time has somewhere to go, and that protective workings made now carry the authority of the season's turning. What you close at Samhain stays closed. What you open, opens into something genuinely different from what came before.

The Protection Jar

A Samhain protection jar is made to hold a boundary. It is not aggressive magic; it does not harm. It is a sealed declaration of what is and is not welcome in your space, your life, or your energy, reinforced by the materials inside it and the intention with which it was made.

Ingredients for the Protection Jar

Black salt
Foundational protection ingredient. Absorbs and repels negative energy. Layer it first, at the bottom.
Alternative: regular salt + ash from burned rosemary
Black tourmaline chips
The strongest protective crystal. Creates a field that deflects and neutralises. Add several small pieces.
Alternative: obsidian chips
Dried rosemary
Long-standing protection herb. Clears the space and stands guard. Add a generous pinch.
Alternative: bay leaf
Cloves
Drive away unwanted energy and people who drain you. Add 3 or 9 cloves.
Alternative: black peppercorns
Dried rue
Traditional protective herb against the evil eye and psychic intrusion.
Alternative: dried lavender
A small mirror fragment or reflective piece
Reflects back what is sent at you. Optional but powerful. Use a broken piece from a compact.
Not required
Your name or a symbol of yourself
A piece of paper with your name in your own handwriting, or a small object that represents you, placed in the centre.
Required for the working to be targeted
Black wax to seal
A black candle dripped over the lid once the jar is closed. Seals the working.
Alternative: dark purple wax

"A sealed declaration of what is and is not welcome."

The Release Jar

The release jar works differently from the protection jar. Rather than building up layers of protective material, it draws in what you wish to let go: the thing is placed inside, sealed, and then disposed of in a specific way that finalises the release. This is not a jar you keep. It is a jar you make and then discard.

Ingredients for the Release Jar

What you are releasing, written on paper
Write clearly what you are letting go of: a relationship, a behaviour pattern, a story you have told yourself, a feeling you are done carrying. Be specific.
Required
Dried mugwort
Assists with endings, psychic release, and crossing thresholds. Traditional Samhain herb.
Alternative: dried wormwood or yarrow
Smoky quartz chip
Transmutes and dissolves. Draws out what no longer serves.
Alternative: black obsidian chip
A pinch of black salt
Cuts ties. Dissolves the energetic attachment to what you are releasing.
Alternative: coarse sea salt
Dried vervain
Aids release and facilitates transitions. Also associated with purification.
Alternative: dried sage
A piece of iron or iron-containing stone
Grounds and finalises. Iron nails or a piece of hematite work. Signals permanence of the release.
Alternative: hematite

Step-by-Step: Making Both Jars

  • Gather and prepare your space
Cleanse the space where you will work using smoke, sound, or salt water. Have both jars and all ingredients in front of you before you begin. Do this work at night, ideally on October 29, 30, or 31, when the veil is at its thinnest. Light a candle, ideally black for the protection jar and white for the release jar.
  • Set your intention clearly before you touch anything
Sit for a moment before you begin. Know precisely what the protection jar is protecting you from or for, and what the release jar is receiving. The ingredients carry general energy; your intention makes them specific to your life. Do not start building the jar while your mind is elsewhere.
  • Build the protection jar in layers, from base to top
Begin with the black salt at the bottom. Add the crystal chips. Then the herbs, one at a time, holding each briefly and stating its purpose aloud before placing it: "Rosemary: you stand guard. Cloves: you drive away what drains me." Add the mirror piece if you are using it. Place your name paper in the centre, folded toward you (folding toward yourself draws protection in). Finish with any remaining crystal or herb on top.
  • Build the release jar with intention and directness
Fold the paper with what you are releasing away from you (away from yourself signals sending outward). Place it in the jar first. Add the mugwort, then the crystal chip, then the black salt, then any remaining herbs. As you place each one, you are not beseeching: you are instructing. "This is leaving. This is done. This is finished."
  • Speak the incantation over each jar
Use the words below, or your own. Say them aloud. The vibration of your voice in the space matters. Do not read them hurriedly.
  • Seal both jars
Close the lids firmly. Drip black wax over the lid of the protection jar, sealing it. For the release jar, seal it with white or grey wax. As you seal each one, say: "It is sealed. It is done. It holds."
  • Place the protection jar and dispose of the release jar
The protection jar lives at your threshold: near your front door, on your windowsill, at the entrance to your bedroom, or buried near the boundary of your property. The release jar is disposed of away from your home. The traditional disposal is burial in earth away from your land, or dropping it into moving water. If neither is practical, wrap it in dark cloth and place it in an external rubbish bin, not your home rubbish. The point is physical and symbolic distance from yourself.

Incantation for the Protection Jar

At the thinning of the veil, at the year's last turning,

I seal this working against what does not serve me.

What is mine is mine. What enters, enters with my leave.

This threshold is held. This boundary is sealed.

So it is, at Samhain's turning.

Incantation for the Release Jar

At the thinning of the veil, at the year's last turning,

I give this back. I let this go. I am done with this.

It belonged to a version of me that is ending now.

I cross the threshold without it.

So it is, at Samhain's turning.

When to Make These Jars

★
29 Oct: Preparation night. Gather your materials, write your release paper, and cleanse the space. Do not rush the writing; it can take time to be precise about what you are releasing.
★★
30 Oct: Good working night if you cannot do Oct 31. The veil is already thin and the timing is powerful.
★★★
31 Oct (Halloween): Optimal. If you are also building an ancestor altar, make the jars first, then sit with the altar. Or reverse this: sit with your ancestors first, then make the jars with whatever clarity that sitting has given you.
◆
Nov 1: If you missed Halloween, this is still within Samhain's energetic window. The new year in the Celtic calendar begins at midnight on Oct 31, but the gate does not close immediately.
Beginner variation
  • Use only salt, one herb (rosemary for protection, sage for release), and your name or intention paper
  • Seal with tape instead of wax if you have no candle
  • The simplest version still works if the intention is clear
Ancestral protection variation
  • Add a small photograph of a protective ancestor to the protection jar
  • Include a drop of their favourite scent (perfume, a herb they grew)
  • Call them by name when sealing: "Stand with me"
Home protection variation
  • Make one large jar for the home rather than personal protection
  • Include something from each room: a pinch of earth from the doorstep, a thread from a curtain
  • Bury at the centre of the property if possible
Wax sourcing note: Any candle wax works. Drip it slowly over the lid and let it set fully before moving the jar. If you do not have black wax, dark purple, dark red, or dark blue are all appropriate for protection work at Samhain.
