How to Use Your Witchcraft Supplies

A beginner's guide to what each tool is for and how to start your first ritual

Witchcraft tools are focus aids: each one represents an element or an intention and helps you direct your energy. Candles bring fire and colour magic, crystals store and amplify energy, herbs carry the qualities of plants, the athame and wand direct energy, and the altar holds it all together. You do not need everything at once. A candle, a crystal, one herb and a clear intention are enough to begin.

What Is Witchcraft?

What is witchcraft, in simple terms?

Witchcraft is the practice of using intention, ritual and natural energies to create change in your life. It draws on nature, symbolism and personal belief, and you do not need to follow a set tradition: your practice can be entirely your own.

How to Do Your First Ritual

First Ritual

A simple six step ritual for beginners

15 to 20 minutes. Use any intention you like.

  1. Cleanse your space. Use incense smoke, sound such as a bell, or simply visualise light filling the room.

  2. Set your intention. Speak or write it clearly in one sentence.

  3. Activate your tools. Hold each item in turn and focus your purpose into it.

  4. Raise energy. Chant, hum, drum or breathe deeply until you feel a shift.

  5. Release it. Send the intention out with thanks, often as you light or snuff the candle.

  6. Ground yourself. Eat, drink or touch the earth to settle back into everyday awareness.

Write down what you did and how you felt. Over time this becomes your grimoire.

Tips for beginners

You do not need expensive tools; intention matters most. Start small, practise often and build confidence before trying complex rituals. Always practise candle and fire safety.

Beginner Witchcraft Questions Answered

What supplies do I need to start witchcraft?

To start, you need only a candle, one crystal such as clear quartz, a herb such as rosemary or lavender, and a journal. Add other tools as your practice grows.

Do I need to cleanse new witchcraft tools?

Yes. Cleanse new tools with smoke, moonlight, salt or sound to clear energy picked up in transit, then dedicate them to your practice.

Is an athame used for cutting?

No. A traditional athame is a ceremonial blade used to direct energy. Many witches keep a separate knife, sometimes called a boline, for cutting herbs.
