What Are Chakras and Why Do They Matter in Magic?
What is a chakra?
A chakra is an energy centre in the subtle body. The word comes from the Sanskrit for wheel, and the seven main chakras sit in a line from the base of the spine to the top of the head, each linked to a colour, an element and an area of life.
The chakra system comes from Indian tantric and yogic traditions, and the seven chakra model most witches use today was popularised in the West during the twentieth century. Many modern practitioners have folded it into their craft because it gives a clear map of where energy feels stuck and what to work on.
In a magical context, chakras act as channels. When they are clear, the energy you raise moves freely from intention into the candle, jar or sigil. When one is blocked, spells can feel flat or scattered. Aligning first is like tuning an instrument before you play.
Chakra Correspondences for Witches
Use this table to match crystals, herbs and candle colours to the chakra that supports your spell. Pick one or two items per chakra; you do not need them all.

How Do You Know a Chakra Is Blocked?
What are the signs of a blocked chakra?
A blocked chakra usually shows up as a pattern in the area of life it governs: feeling unsafe or scattered points to the root, creative flatness to the sacral, self doubt to the solar plexus, closed off feelings to the heart, trouble speaking up to the throat, foggy intuition to the third eye and a sense of disconnection to the crown.
- Root: anxiety, money worries, feeling ungrounded.
- Sacral: low passion, blocked creativity, emotional numbness.
- Solar plexus: low confidence, fear of acting, giving your power away.
- Heart: bitterness, jealousy, difficulty receiving care.
- Throat: swallowing your words, or saying things you do not mean.
- Third eye: confusion, second guessing, tarot readings that feel muddy.
- Crown: cynicism, feeling spiritually cut off.
Energy work is a spiritual practice, not a medical one. If a physical or mental health symptom persists, see a health professional alongside your practice.
Full Chakra Alignment Ritual
Chakra alignment ritual for witches
30 to 45 minutes. Best done before a significant spell or on a full moon.
Cleanse and protect the space. Clear the room with smoke, sound or a salt bowl. Cast a circle if that is part of your practice.
Ground. Sit with both feet flat on the floor and take slow breaths for five minutes, picturing roots running from your spine into the earth.
Place the crystals. Lie down and set each stone in position: root at the base of the spine, sacral below the navel, solar plexus below the ribs, heart at the centre of the chest, throat at the throat, third eye between the brows and crown just above the head.
Breathe colour. Starting at the root, breathe that chakra's colour into it on each inhale and let any heaviness dissolve on each exhale. Move upward one centre at a time.
Chant the seed sounds. Repeat each sound nine times: LAM for root, VAM for sacral, RAM for solar plexus, YAM for heart, HAM for throat, OM for third eye, and silence or a single high tone for the crown.
Infuse your spell. While aligned, hold your candle, jar, sigil or potion and picture the gathered energy flowing from your body into it.
Close and ground. Thank any guides you work with, collect the crystals, then eat or drink something to settle back into your body. Note what you felt in your journal.

Quick Rituals for Single Chakras
When you only have a few minutes before spellwork, focus on the one chakra the spell depends on most.
Root reset (5 to 10 minutes)
Stand barefoot on grass or soil holding hematite. Picture a steady red light at the base of your spine and say aloud, “I am here. I am safe.” Ideal before protection and banishing work.
Sacral spark (10 minutes)
Light an orange candle, dab a little diluted orange blossom oil below your navel and sway or dance while picturing what you want to create. Useful before love, creativity or glamour spells.
Throat opener (5 minutes)
Hold lapis lazuli at your throat and hum or chant HAM until your voice feels warm and easy. Do this before any spell you will speak aloud.
Third eye boost (15 minutes)
Meditate with amethyst, then draw a single tarot card or work with a pendulum to exercise your intuition. Pair it with our guide to chakras and tarot.
Daily chakra check
Before spellwork, rate each chakra as low, steady or high in your journal. Over a few weeks you will see which centres dip at certain moon phases or times of the month, and you can plan your magic around that pattern.
Timing Chakra Work With the Moon and Days
Layering chakra work with lunar and weekly timing adds another level of focus. Use this as a guide rather than a rule.
| Chakra | Spells it supports | Moon phase | Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Root | Protection, stability, home | Waning | Saturday |
| Sacral | Fertility, passion, creativity | Waxing | Monday |
| Solar Plexus | Career, success, courage | Full | Sunday |
| Heart | Love, forgiveness, healing | Waxing | Friday |
| Throat | Truth, communication, study | Full | Wednesday |
| Third Eye | Divination, dream work | Waning or dark | Thursday |
| Crown | Spiritual connection, new paths | New | Monday |

Chakra Magic Questions Answered
How do witches use chakras in spellwork?
Witches use chakras to prepare their energy before a spell and to direct it during one. A common method is to align all seven, then focus on the chakra linked to the spell's purpose, such as the heart for love work or the root for protection, while charging the candle, jar or sigil.
How long does it take to align your chakras?
A full alignment takes 30 to 45 minutes. A focused reset on a single chakra can take as little as five minutes, and a short daily practice tends to work better than an occasional long one.
Which crystals are best for chakra alignment?
Clear quartz works for every chakra. For a full set, use hematite or obsidian for the root, carnelian for the sacral, citrine for the solar plexus, rose quartz for the heart, lapis lazuli for the throat, amethyst for the third eye and selenite for the crown.
Can you align chakras without crystals?
Yes. Breath, colour visualisation and the seed sounds are enough on their own. Crystals, candles and herbs are focus tools that many witches find helpful, but they are not required.
Which chakra should I work on first?
Most traditions start with the root, because grounding makes every other centre easier to work with. After that, work on whichever chakra matches the area of life that feels most stuck.
